To keep water pipes from freezing, Bruce Ward Electric LLC (434-981-2912) installed a fan-force 4,000-watt heater in the well-insulated crawl space of my Wintergreen mountain home on March 3, 2023. It replaces three heat lamps on a manual thermostat. The new heater has a thermostat set at 40 degrees. His preliminary estimate for the job was $1,500. He completed the installation for $865. I will purchase a wireless thermometer with one sensor so I can monitor performance from inside the house. At age 82, I am hoping my crawling days under the house are over. On the night of July 14th Wintergreen Fire and Rescue experienced a power outage on the mountain and our station generator failed. We accidentally summoned not one, but two electrical firms for the after-hour repair. What happens when two pro electricians who have never met one another show up at the same time, to do the same repair? They introduce themselves to one another and then work together to resolve the problem. One gentleman explained that he had to leave his family at a fair in Rockingham County when he received our call. The other gentleman actually had his young daughter in tow. She eventually got bored and fell asleep in the truck. People often praise us for our quick responses and our willingness to leave our families when duty calls. Thank you. The same praise should be extended to all of the dedicated folks who help us with logistics. We operate out of 3 stations 24/7/365. Sleep On It - 540-943-5850

I am happy to recommend Sleep On It!, a mattress store in Waynesboro (540-943-5850). We were able to complete the purchase over the phone and they delivered it to our Stony Creek home as promised. They carry Paramount mattresses–made in the USA by a company based in Norfolk (as well as many other brands). They took away the old mattress, saying they would put the mattress out behind their store and that it would almost certainly disappear within hours. A&E Factory Service - 800-905-9505

We called a local appliance repair firm we had used in the past to have our refrigerator fixed, but they told us their tech who did that kind of work had quit. They suggested we call A&E Factory Service (1-800-905-9505), a national firm based in Illinois that has technicians in this area. The A&E tech did a very good job and we'll use them again. Albert told us he often comes to Wintergreen. There are a lot of steps on the phone and online you have to follow with A&E. We had to agree to pay $114 for someone to come out even if we didn't like their analysis of the issue or their projected cost of the repair, which in our case was not cheap but not outrageous. I highly recommend a small family-owned business, All Washed Up, that cleaned our roof of moss and algae. They performed a thorough cleaning using a low-pressure, soft wash process and algaecide to kill and neutralize the shingle damaging algae and moss. With cold weather coming on, I requested an evaluation of insulation in the crawl space under my Wintergreen mountain home. Based on the tip I received from a WBB subscriber, I contacted Toler Insulation of Lynchburg, 434-239-8590. Toler determined that the existing insulation was excellent. Curtain insulation was installed over vertical surfaces around the foundation in 2010 when we put an addition on house. I was told that the insulation overhead, which seemed to need patching and stapling, was nothing to worry about. No improvement was needed. Submitted by Charles Murphy. December 2021

He took the faceplates off of the kitchen outlets and treated the electric boxes, opened the windows and treated the windowsills, sprayed the decks, front porch, siding, and under the eaves. He schedules you for your next quarterly visit while he is there so you know when to be in Wintergreen well in advance. Sam is knowledgeable and friendly.
