Fire and Frost Wood-Fired Bakehouse

Fire and Frost started serving breakfast and lunch on January 20, 2023, offering made-to-order pizzas from their wood-fired oven along with homemade pastries and quiches for breakfast. The hours this spring are 10 am to 6 pm, every day except Mondays.

The new independent breakfast & lunch spot is on top of Wintergreen's mountain. They'll be open every day of the week from 8 am to 4 pm, except Mondays.

Husband and wife Helen and Jared Walden are the owners and operators. The couple is now full-time Wintergreen mountain residents, having recently moved from their home in Virginia’s Tidewater.

Jared has worked as a manager in corporate restaurants. He has also owned and operated a landscaping business. Helen has food service experience as well.

They are expecting approval on their ABC license. Not only will they be able to serve beer and wine in a few weeks, but they’ll have retail beer and wine sales as well.

The restaurant hopes to offer soon delivery on the mountain along with a website to allow online ordering.

“One thing we’ll have very soon are some take-and-bake offerings,” says Will Mercer, who calls himself the Walden’s “silent partner” in this new operation. “These will be pre-prepared dishes that are ready for your oven.”

The shop’s phone number is 434-326-5639, but they’re not taking orders over the phone yet. They’re so busy they often can’t answer the phone. For now, the best way to see what’s going on is to check Fire and Frost’s new Facebook page.

Breakfast items currently include spinach and cheddar quiches, morning buns from the woodstove, sausage & gravy, bacon, egg & cheese quiches, and roasted apple and brie pastries.

“We could not get a commercial wood-fired oven through the doors, so we built this ourselves,” says Jared Walden.

Helen Walden is ready with her a state-of-the-art commercial espresso machine. See the coffee menu here.

Fire and Frost “silent partner” Will Mercer owns several residential properties at Wintergreen.

The restaurant is in the former DeVine/Black Bear BBQ location. They have leased the entire first floor but don’t yet have firm plans on how they will use all of the space.
