In December WBB subscriber Jerry Akman asked readers of our newsletter for suggestions on reducing the cost of maintaining his Verizon telephone landline in his vacation home on Wintergreen Mountain. He carefully investigated several alternatives and was kind enough to share what he learned about inexpensive VoIP services. Here's his report:

We have had Verizon landline phone service since we bought our condo on Wintergreen mountain almost 30 years ago. As we can use our cellphones from our condo, we had the most minimal Verizon plan—911 service, no long distance and per call charges for local calls.

For this minimal service, after a rate increase from Verizon, our monthly service fee including taxes, fees, etc., (but not counting any per call charges) was $33, or $400 per year. I would like to recommend Doug Hill of Commonwealth Carpet Cleaning (540-910-0833) or commonwealthcarpet@gmail.com. Doug is a delightful guy no worries about him being in the house. A good communicator, honest about any problems he found, and showed what he had used to try and shift a difficult stain. High standard of work, reasonably priced. Douglas Hill at Commonwealth Carpet of Waynesboro (540-910-0833) did a conscientious, timely, and thorough job of cleaning our carpets and sofas last week. They look infinitely better. He even sent a photo halfway through one of the bedrooms to illustrate the “before” and “after.” Additionally, he ensured that woodwork corners were protected. Danny’s Quality Upholstery (434-293-3506) on Ivy Road did an excellent job for us on dining room chairs. They have no problem using your own fabric unlike some that want to make extra bucks using marked-up samples you can buy online for much less. They know their business, are very friendly, professional, and accommodating. It is a very unassuming place (an old former commercial garage) so don’t be put off by the appearance. Cora Pennell.
